Tehran: The impact of the ongoing tension between Iran and America is now visible on sea routes as well. Yemen's Houthi rebels targeted a commercial ship near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Four crew members of the ship died in this attack. Two Yemeni personnel of the Houthi opposition group also lost their lives during the rescue operation.

The incident is said to be one of the most serious Houthi attacks at sea since the start of the Iran-US conflict. After the attack, concerns have increased regarding the security of the Red Sea and surrounding sea routes.

How did the ship attack near Bab el-Mandeb happen?

According to Yemen's Transport Ministry, the Egyptian-owned small cargo ship 'Tihama' was passing near Bab al-Mandeb. During this time the ship was targeted. After the attack, the ship's crew faced a difficult situation.

Houthi-backed media claimed they targeted a ship belonging to Saudi Arabia, which was reportedly carrying military equipment. However, this claim has not been independently confirmed.

Why is Bab el-Mandeb so important?

The Bab el-Mandeb is a major sea route connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Through this, a large number of ships travel between Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

This is why any kind of attack or military activity in this area can affect international shipping. As security threats increase, ships may have to take longer alternative routes, increasing both time and transportation costs.

What happened during the rescue operation?

After receiving information about the attack on the ship, the rescue team reached the spot. According to Yemeni officials, Houthi fighters reportedly attacked again during the relief operation.

During this, two Yemeni rescue workers of the anti-Huthi National Resistance Forces were killed. This incident further aggravated the already tense situation.

Why did America also take action in the sea?

Meanwhile, America also took action in the maritime sector. According to the US military, a Panama-flagged cargo ship was violating US sanctions imposed on Iranian ports.

After this, the US Navy helicopter targeted the steering system of the ship. According to American officials, there is no report of any casualty in this action.

What did Iran say on the Strait of Hormuz?

On the other hand, Iran has made its stand clear regarding the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian security official Mohsen Rezai, there is no possibility of reopening of this sea route unless the US accepts Iran's demands.

Iran wants the US to change its stance and agree to its other demands, including the release of Iranian assets frozen abroad.

What will be the effect of Hormuz being closed?

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil transportation routes. If the movement of ships here is affected for a long time, then the supply of crude oil may be affected.

It is expected to have a direct impact on crude oil prices, shipping costs and the global energy market. In such a situation, the increasing tension in both Bab-al-Mandeb and Hormuz will not be limited only to the Middle East, but it can also affect international trade.
