New Delhi: Major news has emerged amidst the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Russia has entered the fray—albeit belatedly—in the context of the Iran conflict. Amidst escalating tensions between Iran and the US, Russia has dispatched a formidable, high-tech aircraft to Tehran. Specifically, Russia has sent its most secure airborne command aircraft to the country.
According to flight tracking data, the elite Tu-214PU aircraft arrived in Tehran following orders from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reports indicate that this specialized variant from the Tupolev Design Bureau is a modified version of the standard Tu-214 passenger jet, serving as a flying command post for Russia. This deployment between Moscow and Tehran is being viewed as a signal of strong Kremlin support for Iran.
The Tu-214PU serves as a mobile, airborne command post for the Kremlin (the Russian presidential office). It is equipped with state-of-the-art secure communication systems, encrypted links, satellite communication capabilities, and redundant systems designed to function even during a nuclear attack or major warfare. The aircraft is engineered to operate in all weather conditions, amidst electronic jamming, and in high-threat environments. It is powered by two robust Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofan engines, delivering a top speed of 850 km/h and an operational range of 6,500 to 7,000 kilometers.
The aircraft is operated by the Rossiya Special Flight Squadron, which is tasked with the safe transport of Russia's top political and military leadership during major national emergencies. The aircraft first flew in 1989 and entered commercial service in the 1990s; it was subsequently upgraded specifically for use by the President and high-ranking command.
Military, technical, and intelligencae cooperation between Russia and Iran has been steadily increasing over the past several years. The two nations remain close allies regarding the war in Ukraine, the Syrian crisis, and now, the situation in West Asia. Experts view the deployment of the Tu-214PU as part of high-level direct dialogue, real-time intelligence sharing, and joint emergency planning between Russia and Iran.
Analysts estimate that this aircraft could provide the Iranian high command with secure command-and-control capabilities during US attacks. Furthermore, it serves as a clear message from Moscow that it will not abandon Tehran and stands with it at every step.
This deployment comes at a time when US Central Command (CENTCOM) has launched large-scale attacks against Iran. According to a CENTCOM statement, US fighter jets, naval warships, one-way attack drones, and sea drones were used to target Iran's air defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone bases, and small attack boats. The US claims the objective of these strikes is to destroy Iran's capability to attack international commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iran also retaliated against the US. Tehran launched missile and drone attacks on US airbases located in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Oman. An official statement from the Iranian military described the US actions as a "flagrant violation of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter." Iran also alleged that these attacks caused damage to civilian infrastructure and harmed ordinary citizens, in addition to targeting military installations.
