Strong earthquake measuring 6.5 rocks Mexico, tremors felt across region

Mexico City: A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck Mexico City on Friday. President Claudia Sheinbaum was addressing a press conference when the tremors hit. 

She immediately left the podium as the tremors began. This was President Sheinbaum's first press conference of the new year. Everyone in the hall then evacuated for safety. A video of the incident has surfaced on social media. According to media reports, the tremors were felt across the entire region.

What do we know so far?

The earthquake measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. However, no reports of casualties or significant damage have been received so far. The EMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre) reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was near Acapulco in Guerrero state. Despite strong tremors felt in parts of the capital, President Sheinbaum later stated that no serious damage had been reported in Guerrero so far.

Authorities said that assessments of the earthquake's impact are ongoing, and emergency services remain on high alert.
