International News:The Trump administration has cancelled nearly 6,000 student visas, and a significant number of them are believed to be held by Indian students. The decision has created concern among families in India, as the United States continues to be one of the most popular destinations for higher education.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the main reason for this action is overstaying the permitted duration of stay and violation of U.S. immigration laws. Officials explained that student visas are granted for a fixed period, and when students remain beyond that limit, it becomes a violation. Strict action is then taken, which includes the cancellation of visas.
Of the 6,000 visas revoked, around 4,000 were cancelled because the holders were involved in breaking American laws. Some of these individuals were even linked to violent incidents during their stay. Authorities said that the misuse of student visas for purposes other than education cannot be tolerated, and the government is determined to ensure that such activities are controlled.
In addition to overstaying and law violations, between 200 and 300 visas were cancelled for people suspected of supporting terrorism. However, the officials did not disclose which particular groups these individuals were connected to. The lack of details has raised questions, but the U.S. administration maintained that national security remains a priority.
Every year, thousands of Indian students apply for U.S. universities, making India one of the largest sources of international students. This decision has worried students and parents, who fear that stricter rules could affect their studies and future opportunities. Experts suggest that while genuine students should not panic, they must strictly follow visa rules and avoid any activity that could put their status at risk.
Officials highlighted that the purpose of a student visa is strictly education. Anyone found misusing it for staying illegally, breaking laws, or supporting unlawful activities will face immediate cancellation. The U.S. government has made it clear that it will continue to take firm steps to maintain security and protect the integrity of its immigration system.
The cancellation of 6,000 student visas, including many belonging to Indian nationals, reflects the tightening of immigration policies under the Trump administration. For Indian students, this serves as a reminder that while the U.S. offers great opportunities for education, compliance with the law is essential to secure their future abroad.
