International News: While global attention is fixed on Trump’s meeting with Xi Jinping, a more dramatic possibility is emerging. Reports suggest Trump could meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his stop in South Korea. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which separates the two Koreas, is being mentioned again as a possible venue. Trump himself hinted at this, saying that if Kim is willing, he would “100 percent” meet him. This has sparked a wave of speculation across Asian capitals.

Why North Korea Matters Now

Trump knows that North Korea’s nuclear arsenal remains one of the biggest threats in Asia. Despite previous talks, Pyongyang continues to expand its weapons program. By reopening dialogue, Trump aims to reassert America’s leadership in regional security. A meeting with Kim, even symbolic, would send a strong message to allies like Japan and South Korea that Washington is still committed to peace and stability on the peninsula.

What Could Be on the Table?

Analysts believe Trump may attempt to revive elements of his earlier negotiations with Kim. Possible areas of discussion include freezing missile tests, opening humanitarian channels, and offering limited sanctions relief in return. While a full denuclearization deal is unlikely, Trump may seek incremental progress. This approach could create momentum for longer-term talks, while giving both leaders an image boost on the global stage.

How Is Kim Jong Un Responding?

Kim has remained silent in public, but North Korean media have been signaling interest in dialogue. Officials in Seoul believe Kim is closely watching Trump’s tour. With the North Korean economy under strain, Pyongyang may see talks as an opportunity for concessions. However, experts caution that Kim will not appear to bow under US pressure. Any meeting will be carefully choreographed to project equality between the two leaders.

Will South Korea Play Mediator Again?

South Korea’s President Lee Jae-myung is preparing to host Trump for talks during the APEC Summit in Busan. Seoul has traditionally played a bridge role between Washington and Pyongyang. If Trump and Kim meet, it is likely that South Korean officials will help manage logistics and messaging. For Seoul, any sign of renewed dialogue reduces the risk of sudden military escalation.

What About China and Russia?

Even though Trump’s Asia tour includes China and broader security issues, North Korea is the storyline stealing attention. If Trump meets Kim, Beijing will watch carefully, since China remains Pyongyang’s main economic partner. Russia, meanwhile, has recently courted North Korea for weapons and supplies. A Trump-Kim breakthrough could complicate Moscow’s efforts to use Pyongyang as a partner in its own confrontation with the West.

The Bigger Gamble for Trump

For Trump, pulling off a meeting with Kim Jong Un would be a dramatic diplomatic win. It would show that his Asia tour is not only about Russia or China but also about reshaping the Korean equation. Success could bolster America’s image as a power broker in Asia. Failure, however, could expose the limits of Washington’s influence. Either way, the possibility of a Trump-Kim encounter has already made this Asia tour one of the most closely watched diplomatic missions in years.
