International news: Trump India Tariffs: Hours after imposing a total tariff of 50 percent on products coming from India, US President Donald Trump has warned India of more stringent secondary sanctions for buying oil from Russia. He also made it clear that if there is a peace agreement in the Russia-Ukraine war, the possibility of tariff relief will be considered later.
An executive order issued by the White House on Thursday announced a 25 percent additional duty on imports from India. After which the total tariff imposed on India reached 50 percent. This decision will come into effect from August 27, i.e., 21 days after the signing of the order. The Indian government has opposed this move, calling it unfair, unjust, and impractical.
Speaking to the media in the Oval Office, President Trump said, "It's only been eight hours. Let's see what happens next. You will see a lot. There will be a lot of secondary sanctions."
When he was asked why only India is being targeted when countries like China are also buying Russian oil, he said that strict action can be taken against other countries soon.
When asked by reporters if the tariffs imposed on India could be lifted if a peace deal is reached between Russia and Ukraine, Trump said, "We will determine that later."
India's Foreign Ministry said in an official statement, "The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made it clear that our imports are market-based and aimed at ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion Indians.
India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests. This decision of America is extremely unfortunate and against the principles of mutual respect and strategic partnership.
President Trump also hinted that tariffs could be imposed on China like India. This statement comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing for his first visit to China in seven years, at a time when India's relations with Washington are becoming tense.
When Trump was asked if additional sanctions would be imposed on China, he said, "It is possible, as we have done on India. Maybe we will do it in some other countries as well. One of them could be China."
