Washington: US President Donald Trump on Friday once again made a controversial statement regarding Greenland. He said the US would "do something" there, whether Greenland felt good or bad. Trump says that if America does not take action, then Russia or China can occupy that area, which is not acceptable to them at all.
He also added that he wants to reach an agreement by talking peacefully first, but if this does not happen then America can do this forcibly.
Trump said this during an event at the White House. There he was talking to oil company officials about Venezuela's oil reserves. During this discussion, he also spoke openly on Greenland and America's foreign policy.
It is clear from his statement that America is keeping a special eye on those areas that are strategically important. Trump believes that if America retreats, Russia and China will move forward and establish their dominance there.
Trump said that Chinese and Russian warships are present around Greenland. Although the truth is that both countries are active in the Arctic region, but Greenland is not surrounded by their ships. In contrast, America already has a military base there.
He said that Denmark claims Greenland only because one of its boats reached there hundreds of years ago. This statement was seen by many as ignoring the will of the people of Greenland and international rules.
Experts say that if America forcibly occupies Greenland, it would be against NATO rules. Under NATO, an attack on one country is considered an attack on all countries. Trump did not pay much attention to this and said that America will protect Greenland only when it has direct control there.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen and other leaders clearly rejected Trump's statement. He said that he neither wants to become a part of America nor any other country, but wants to remain a citizen of Greenland with his own identity. This issue is also going to be discussed in the Parliament there.
Trump also said that China will no longer be able to buy oil directly from Venezuela. It will have to buy oil only from America or America-controlled markets. He says that this will strengthen America's hold in the energy business.
He also added that China can buy as much oil from America as it wants, but America will decide the rules.
