Washington: Hot on the heels of the visit US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to India, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has showered rich praise on the Indian military and the country's defence modernisation. Delivering a speech on the second day of the Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore, Pete Hegseth stated, "India serves as a vital cornerstone in South Asia. A strong India—acting in alignment with its national interests—advances our shared objective of maintaining a balance of power across the entire region."
While commending India's military modernization efforts, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth specifically highlighted the country's expanding role within the Indian Ocean Region. He remarked, "India is modernizing its military capabilities to enable it to contribute to regional security responsibilities, particularly within the Indian Ocean."
Furthermore, while lauding India's defense manufacturing capabilities, Pete Hegseth noted, "India is developing robust industrial and logistical capabilities to sustain high-intensity military operations over extended periods. This includes the capacity to repair and maintain shared military platforms, as well as to provide support to U.S. Navy vessels deployed within the region."
Highlighting the growing defense cooperation between the United States and India, Pete Hegseth mentioned that both nations are also actively pursuing joint production initiatives. Hegseth stated, "We have also demonstrated a commitment to pursuing joint production with India, with the aim of further enhancing capabilities such as the Javelin anti-tank guided missile." This is a concrete and practical step towards enhancing the collective combat readiness of our forces.
