Washington: The US Defense Ministry Pentagon has again changed the name of one of its most important military commands, US Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), to US Pacific Command (USPACOM). This decision has sparked a new debate in strategic and diplomatic circles, because in 2018 this command was renamed 'Indo-Pacific.' At that time it was seen as a symbol of India's growing role and the growing importance of the Indian Ocean region.

Why was ‘Indo’ added in 2018?

In May 2018, the then US Defense Secretary James Mattis had announced the renaming of the US Pacific Command to the US Indo-Pacific Command. He had said that the Indian and Pacific Oceans are now strategically connected more than ever. At that time, American officials had described it as a step in recognition of India's growing security and strategic role.

What is the reason given behind changing the name?

The Pentagon says this decision has been taken to restore the command's historical identity. Officially it has been described as “Restoring Legacy” i.e. the process of restoring the old heritage. However, no major strategic change has been announced behind this change.

Will this reduce India's role?

Experts believe that the mere name change is unlikely to have any immediate impact on defense cooperation between the US and India. In the last few years, military exercises, defense agreements and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region between the two countries have continuously increased. America has long viewed India as a key partner in maintaining regional balance.

Why is the Indo-Pacific concept considered important?

The term ‘Indo-Pacific’ is not used merely for geographical identification but is part of a broader strategic approach. Its objective is to envision the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean as a common security and economic region. Amidst the increasing influence of China, countries like America, India, Japan and Australia have developed many partnerships based on this concept.

Why has the discussion increased?

Many analysts are considering this decision of the Pentagon as symbolic, but some experts are also seeing it as a sign of America's changing priorities. Since the addition of the word 'Indo' in 2018 was considered a symbol of India's growing importance, the decision to remove it now has raised the question whether Washington is preparing a new change in its regional strategy. However, at present the US administration has not confirmed any such policy change.

What is going to change?

At present, apart from the change of name, no major change in the responsibilities, jurisdiction or military structure of the command has been announced. Therefore, experts believe that this should be seen only as a symbolic step. The real impact of this decision can be assessed only after keeping an eye on America's Asia policy and its relations with India in the coming months.
