Washington: Relations between America and Iran are still not completely normal. After the recent conversation, US Vice President JD Vance admitted that the distrust between the two countries is very deep and it will not be easy to end it quickly.
He clearly said that the distance that has been going on for decades cannot be closed by one or two meetings. Nevertheless, the continuation of talks indicates that both sides are looking for some solution.
The meeting held in Pakistan's capital Islamabad was special for many reasons. For the first time after 49 years, representatives of America and Iran sat face to face at such a high level. Even though no final decision emerged from this conversation, it is being seen as a new beginning. According to Vance, the atmosphere of the talks was positive and both sides took their views seriously.
It also became clear that differences still exist, but the path to dialogue is open.
Vance also said that Donald Trump's stance is clear. America is trying for a big and comprehensive agreement instead of a small or limited agreement. This means that not only a ban on the nuclear program is being talked about, but also about ensuring stability and security in the entire region.
America wants Iran not to develop nuclear weapons and at the same time it wants to be able to join the global economic system. That means the agreement should be such that it has a long-term impact.
According to Vance, the discussions held in Islamabad were not in vain. Efforts were made to move forward on many issues and some progress was also seen. However, the final agreement has not been reached yet, as many complex issues remain between the two sides. While America wants strict and clear assurances, Iran is also cautious about its interests. This is the reason why the next round of talks is considered very important.
Meanwhile, high level talks have also started between Israel and Lebanon after a long time. This is being considered a positive step towards reducing tension in the area.
However, differences still remain regarding organizations such as Hezbollah operating in Lebanon. This is why the situation cannot be called completely easy.
Overall, the situation still remains critical. On one hand, efforts for dialogue are ongoing, while on the other hand, lack of trust remains a major challenge. At present it is clear that the path of dialogue is open and this is being considered the biggest positive thing at this time.
