Washington: The ongoing diplomatic efforts between America and Iran suffered a setback when the first round of talks between the two countries held in Switzerland ended in a tense atmosphere. A statement by US President Donald Trump during the meeting made the atmosphere more sensitive, after which the Iranian delegation left the meeting for some time.

Were differences visible from the very beginning of the talks?

The purpose of this meeting held on Sunday was to reduce the ongoing tension in the Middle East and to take forward the recent interim agreement. Vice President JD Vance was present on the US side, while Iran was represented by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Iran kept its main conditions

Before the meeting, Iranian representatives held separate talks with mediators from Qatar and Pakistan. Iran made it clear that the success of the talks would depend on how seriously the US implements the terms of the agreement.

Tehran's biggest demands include removing restrictions on oil exports and freeing its assets worth billions of dollars stuck abroad.

Why did Trump's statement increase the controversy?

During the meeting that lasted for about 80 minutes, tension increased when President Trump made a strong statement regarding Iran on social media. Trump called on Iran to control its allies in Lebanon. Iran reacted strongly to this statement and its delegation walked out of the talks for some time.

However, talks resumed later and both sides agreed to continue the dialogue.

What did America say?

US Vice President JD Vance described the incident as a normal part of the diplomatic process, saying there are ups and downs in difficult negotiations. He expressed confidence that the talks will continue further and efforts will be made to reduce differences between the two countries.

Did the issue of Lebanon and Israel also become important?

Iran accused the US of not succeeding in implementing a complete ceasefire in the region. At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon may continue for the time being.

Will the crude oil market also be affected?

The impact of the interruption in talks between America and Iran was also visible on the global oil market. The price of Brent crude rose above 81 dollars per barrel as investor concerns increased, creating new uncertainty in the energy market.

What next?

The delegations of both the countries have expressed their desire to continue the talks. Now the discussion will proceed at the level of technical teams. The world is keeping an eye on whether these talks will be able to reduce regional tensions or will lead to new conflicts.
