Washington: US military officials have turned off advertising identifiers used in mobile phones and computers. The move came after reports emerged claiming that commercially available location data could be used to target US troops deployed in the Middle East.

Why did the US military turn off advertising identifiers?

US military officials recently turned off advertising identifiers, according to letters released on Friday by US Senator Ron Wyden and statements provided to Reuters. Through these identifiers, information related to activities and location related to mobile phones and computers can be collected.

The US Air Force told Wyden that it had turned off advertising identifiers in computers and mobile phones about two months ago. At the same time, the US Special Operations Command informed in a separate letter that it has recently disabled these identifiers in its Windows devices as well.

How could American soldiers be targeted using location data?

According to reports, information about the movements and possible locations of US troops deployed in the Middle East could be obtained from commercially available location data. This type of data is collected through a number of digital services and advertising technologies.

There has long been a concern among security experts that if information related to the location of military personnel present in sensitive areas falls into the wrong hands, it can be used to create security risks.

Did US military officials investigate the security measures?

Senator Ron Wyden and Representative Pat Harrigan had requested information from the Pentagon to investigate security measures involving military officials. After this matter came to light, the closure of advertising identifiers by the US Army is being seen as a step taken towards the security of sensitive location data.

However, based on available information it is unclear whether the data associated with these advertising identifiers was actually used to influence any particular military operation. The step taken by the authorities is said to be aimed at reducing the risk of possible misuse of digital information related to military personnel and sensitive locations.
