Venezuela Declares Emergency After Devastating Quakes Kill At Least 32, Injure 700

Caracas: Two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday have shaken the entire north-central Venezuel. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez has declared a nationwide state of emergency after the massive earthquakes that caused widespread damage. About 32 people are dead and 700 are injured after the earthquake, officials said. 

Where did the earthquake occur?

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first tremor, measuring 7.2, struck about 160 kilometres (100 miles) west of Caracas on Wednesday, followed just 39 seconds later by a second, more powerful 7.5-magnitude quake. The epicenter is reported near Yumaré. Reports of extensive damage are emerging from several cities, including the capital, Caracas.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez during the address confirmed that about 32 people are dead and 700 are injured after the earthquake.

Videos circulating on social media show the horrific scene of devastation. One video shows a large portion of a multi-story building collapsing. A massive cloud of dust envelopes the area, and people are seen screaming and running for safety. Some are seen carrying their pets in their arms.

Another video shows a heavily damaged building, with several sections collapsed. Below, police, rescue workers, and locals are searching for trapped people. Reports indicate that the greatest concern is for those who may still be trapped under the rubble.

What about the damage?

The powerful earthquake has caused widespread devastation in Venezuela's capital, Caracas, and the city of Moron. The death toll is estimated to be between 10,000 and 100,000. The earthquake has caused the airport and several buildings to collapse, leaving everything devastated. Following this turmoil, a tsunami alert has been issued.
