New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in the Middle East and sharp exchanges of words between the US and Iran, China has stepped up its diplomatic engagement. On Monday (January 26), Chinese Vice President and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held important talks with the Secretary General of the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Beijing.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the state-run news agency Xinhua, these talks came at a time when the situation in the Middle East remains extremely sensitive and the possibility of a military conflict is growing. The meeting came against the backdrop of a senior Iranian official warning that “any attack on Iran will be viewed as a full-scale war.”
In fact, just a day earlier, US President Donald Trump had said that the US had sent an “armada,” a large naval fleet, to Iran, as a “precautionary measure.” Trump also warned Iran against killing protesters or restarting its nuclear program.
Meanwhile, an Iranian official in the region claimed on Sunday that at least 5,000 people have died so far during demonstrations against economic hardships. These figures could not be independently confirmed, but they further highlight the gravity of the situation.
Amid this tension, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in a conversation with the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Monday, stressed the need to build a regional security partnership for the Middle East and politically resolve sensitive issues. According to a Foreign Ministry statement, China believes that only dialogue and cooperation, rather than confrontation and military action, can bring stability to the region.
According to the report, Wang said, "China is ready to work with Islamic countries to protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries. China is ready to prevent the world from returning to the law of the jungle." The Chinese Foreign Minister also stated that hotspot issues in the region should be resolved politically, not through military operations. According to the Chinese Foreign Minister, due to Trump's policies, the world is moving towards a 'law of the jungle' in which Trump can impose tariffs on anyone and whenever he wants.
Meanwhile, US officials have reported that an aircraft carrier and several guided-missile destroyer warships are scheduled to arrive in the Middle East region in the coming days. According to analysts, China's talks with the OIC, amid this military deployment and diplomatic activity, indicate that Beijing is seeking to establish itself as a responsible global power and a potential mediator. Experts believe that rising tensions in West Asia could impact not only regional but also global power balances. Therefore, this initiative by China could play a significant role in international politics in the coming days.
