China President Xi Jinping Heads to India for BRICS Summit, Set to Meet PM Modi Today

New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping is coming to New Delhi on September 12 and 13 on the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will participate in the 18th BRICS summit to be held at Bharat Mandapam. During this time, there is every possibility of a one-to-one meeting between PM Modi and Jinping. This meeting of the two leaders is taking place at a time when India-China relations have seen a lot of ups and downs in the last few years.

Will Modi-Jinping meet face to face after 7 years?

This will be the third consecutive year when Modi and Jinping will meet face to face. Earlier, both had met in Kazan and Tianjin. But this visit of Jinping to India is special, because this will be his first visit to India after the Mamallapuram Summit of 2019. China's Foreign Ministry and China's Ambassador to India Xu Feihong have also confirmed this visit. It is reported that both the countries are preparing to hold a bilateral meeting.

Will efforts to improve India-China relations be intensified?

Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong said on social media X that it is very important to continue the talks between India and China at the top level. He said that both the countries are trying to take relations to new heights with strategic guidance and long term perspective.

The ambassador emphasised that India and China should not be seen as rivals but as development partners. There has also been talk of increasing dialogue and strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

Why is Jinping's visit to India so important?

This visit of Jinping is also important because there has been tension between the two countries on LAC for a long time. In such a situation, direct talks between the top leadership can be a big step towards stabilising relations. This visit is taking place when India is chairing BRICS. Issues like trade, financial cooperation, technology, artificial intelligence, energy security, climate action and reform of global institutions are to be discussed in the conference.

What will be the focus on the Global South in BRICS?

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13 at the Bharat Mandapam. The theme of India's chairmanship for 2026 is 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'.

Through this conference, India wants to put forward the priorities of the Global South. In the expanded BRICS group, issues like trade, finance, technology, energy and reform of global institutions will be discussed among the member countries.

Will India's diplomacy with Russia and China get a new basis?

Just before BRICS, PM Modi and President Jinping had met during the SCO summit held in Tianjin. Then both the leaders had emphasized on taking bilateral relations forward. Russian President Vladimir Putin was also present in that meeting. Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami wrote in the Global Times that President Xi has told PM Modi that the two countries are not each other's rivals but are development partners. He also said that peace and stability on the border are essential for broader India-China relations.
