Ukraine: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine and Russia are going to hold the first-ever trilateral talks with the US in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this weekend. This is being considered an important diplomatic step towards ending the war.
He made this announcement during the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he clearly said that now Ukraine's priority is not just war but finding a path to peace and rebuilding the ruined economy.
Zelensky said Ukrainian and Russian representatives would sit on the same platform with US officials. If the meeting goes ahead as planned, it will be the first time since the war began that the three sides will hold formal talks. Ukraine has indicated that the talks will focus on guaranteeing security after the war and rebuilding the country.
Zelensky also had a separate meeting with US President Donald Trump in Davos. The two leaders discussed post-war security arrangements, economic reconstruction and ways to start a “real dialogue”.
Trump reiterated that this war should not go on any longer. He said many people have lost their lives, and every day of delay means more deaths. He also said in Davos that he understands that it is not easy to reach an agreement, but now the situation has become such that it is necessary to find a solution.
According to Trump, the situation of agreement was reached many times in the past, but both the parties backed out at the last moment. He cited the deep hostility between Zelensky and Putin as the biggest obstacle.
He described the situation on the ground as “extremely scary” and said thousands of people were being killed every week in drone strikes and daily fighting.
Zelensky has said that his envoys are preparing some important documents in collaboration with US officials. These include an outline for Ukraine's security arrangements and economic assistance after the war. Kyiv has made it clear that security and reconstruction will be the basis of any agreement.
In diplomatic circles, this meeting is being considered a rare opportunity, where all three parties will be able to present their views directly to each other. Although no definite expectations are being expressed regarding any major agreement, both America and Ukraine believe that this will be able to show whether Russia really wants to follow the path of peace or not.
This conversation can prove to be an important turning point towards ending this war that has been going on for almost four years.
