New Delhi: The cold is gradually increasing, and the change in temperature is causing many people to experience problems like colds, coughs, and sore throats. Children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems like asthma should be especially cautious during this time. However, cold weather doesn't directly cause viral infections.

The change in temperature, prolonged indoor periods, and poor air circulation increase the likelihood of virus spread. There are some habits we adopt every day that can prove dangerous for us during winter. Let us tell you about them.

7 mistakes that can lead to illness in winter

Not dressing appropriately: Wear warm clothing when going out in the morning and at night. It's best to wear multiple layers of clothing to accommodate the cold.

Drinking Less Water: Even though you may feel less thirsty in winter, your body still needs adequate water. Drinking less water can dry out the mucous membranes in your throat and nose. Therefore, make sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

Neglecting hand hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap after going outside, especially in crowded areas. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands.

Blocking airflow in rooms: It's not a good idea to keep windows closed all the time because of the cold. Whenever possible, ensure that rooms are ventilated with fresh air.

Don't underestimate symptoms: Symptoms like sneezing, sore throat, cough, and fever should not be ignored. If these symptoms worsen or persist for a long time, consult a doctor.

Lack of sleep and diet: Lack of adequate sleep and poor nutrition can affect the body's normal immune system. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Self-medication: Don't use antibiotics every time you have a cold or cough without consulting a doctor. The common cold is usually caused by a virus. Antibiotics don't work against viruses.

Who needs more care?

People with asthma, COPD, heart disease, and weakened immune systems should be cautious during weather changes. Getting the necessary vaccinations recommended by doctors can also reduce the risk of infection. If you experience difficulty in breathing, chest pain, a persistent high fever, or worsening symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. To stay healthy this winter, don't neglect small habits like dressing appropriately, drinking water, maintaining good hygiene, and getting enough sleep.
