New Delhi: One of the India's most celebrated and colourful festivals, Braj ki holi, is not a one-day celebration. The festivities in the Braj region around Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana and Nandgaon are already underway and unfolds over nearly 40 days across the Uttar Pradesh. Holi culminates with Holika Dahan on March 3 and the main colour-playing day on March 4.
Holi in Braj, which is more than a one-day celebration, is a series of events that is deeply linked to the life of Lord Krishna.
This colourful festival attracts lakhs of people to visit Vrindavan, Barsana, Mathura and Nandgaon.
The Rangotsav follows a schedule that include Lathmar Holi, Laddu Holi, Phoolon Ki Holi and temple-based colour rituals.
Celebrations often begin with Laddu Holi at Barsana, where sweets are thrown as an offering. On Lathmar Holi, women playfully chase men with sticks, a ritual rooted in local legend. These traditional events unfold over days and draw large crowds from across India.
In Vrindavan, flower-based celebrations, temple rituals and devotional singing create a more spiritual mood before the full blast of Dhulandi colours fills the streets. Many devotees consider playing Holi here a way to connect with the divine pastimes of Krishna.
Visitors should plan early, especially for budget travel and accommodation. Basic hotels in the region during Holi season can range from around Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 per night, while mid-range options may cost Rs 3,000-6,000. And if you wanted cheap and affordable then ashrams or dharamshalas are the good options with range of Rs 500 - Rs 1,000. Rooms in Barsana and Nandgaon sell out quickly, so advance booking is recommended.
Transport and food are additional costs to budget. Local commutes might use e-rickshaws at around Rs 20-50 per ride.
And if you are looking for day-long auto/taxi hires then it can cost you Rs 300 up to Rs 2,500.
Meals at local street stalls usually cost Rs 200-400, while more formal restaurants are higher.
But if you careful plan the visit, then a basic two-day Holi trip can be done on around Rs 3,000.
Authorities and local organisers remind visitors that traffic diversions and crowded lanes are to be expected during the peak days.
Try to carry and wear comfortable shoes that will help in long travel and carry minimal belongings for navigating narrow streets packed with people.
