New Delhi: The Tulsi plant holds religious and cultural significance in Indian homes. This revered plant is also considered special in Ayurveda. This is because Tulsi leaves contain many organic compounds. This plant is found in every Hindu household, and most people have one complaint about this plant: it starts drying up as soon as winter arrives.

In fact, cold winter winds, low light, and high humidity can prove to be the biggest enemies for Tulsi. Even a little carelessness in winter can turn its leaves yellow and black, drying the plant. In such a situation, we are telling you some easy solutions that can help keep the plant green in winter.

Easy tips to keep basil green in winter

1) Just protecting yourself from the cold is not enough
Many people try to protect their basil plants from the cold, but in reality, the basil plant doesn't die from the cold, but rather from dew. In such a situation, a cotton cloth can be used to protect the plant from dew. Wrap the cloth around the plant in such a way that the cloth doesn't touch the leaves. Place four wooden sticks around the plant and then place the cotton cloth on top of them. This maintains airflow and protects the basil from fungus and other diseases.

2) Water at the right time
It is important to water the plant properly during winters. Many people continue to water the plant in the same way in winters as they do in summers. But you have to keep in mind that just like clothes dry slowly in winters, the soil of the plant also dries slowly. If you water the queen plant without the soil drying, the roots die due to remaining wet. Water the Tulsi plant when the soil has dried 5 to 70 percent. You can water the Tulsi plant once in 2 to 4 days. Do not water the Tulsi plant repeatedly in winters.

3) Less sunlight
To protect the basil plant from the cold, people often place the pot where it receives limited sunlight. However, the basil plant needs full sunlight during the winter. Therefore, place the plant in an open courtyard where it receives sunlight throughout the day.

4) Excessive fertilizer and pruning
Tulsi plants naturally stop growing during the winter. Therefore, avoid fertilizing them. Experts say this is like feeding burgers and pizza to an ICU patient, and everyone knows the consequences. Pruning during this time can shock the plant, potentially leading to its death. Therefore, avoid pruning in winter.
