'Lost Trust In All Leaders': Sonam Wangchuk Says Rahul Gandhi Ignored Request to End His Hunger Strike

New Delhi: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk claimed that his wife, Gitanjali, made every effort to contact Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, to have him formally end his 26-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. According to Wangchuk, he wanted to break his fast by the hands of Rahul. However, despite all efforts, he received no positive response. 

What did Sonam say about Rahul?

Sonam Wangchuk made this revelation in an interview, stating that his wife had been trying to arrange for Rahul Gandhi to offer him juice and help conclude the fast

He recounted the night between July 23 and 24, when he ended his 26-day fast by drinking soup from the hands of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. 

Wangchuk said, "Actually, we were pondering on breaking my fast through the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, and Geetanjali was working on that. She was not against Rahul. She was working hard to see if Rahul Gandhi could break my fast. She didn’t get a positive response."

What did Sonam say about JP Nadda?

Sonam Wangchuk said that Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh arrived at the hospital at midnight.

"I said I would break the fast, but the news would be released on my terms, including photographs of opposition leaders and, if possible, student leaders, to make it appear as if it was done together," he said.

As per Sonam Wangchuk, the minister accepted the proposal but just moments later, the agreement was breached and their pictures appeared on social media.

The social activist revealed that the incident should not have been seen as something pertaining only to the ruling party. He added that his faith in political leaders has been shaken due to this case. He said, "They broke their promise. That's why I have lost faith in all these leaders."

What about the protest?

Sonam Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)'s protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi over the NEET paper leak issue. He began his hunger strike on June 28, 2026. Following his deteriorating health, the police forcibly admitted him to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on July 18. He was later transferred to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on the orders of the Delhi High Court.

On July 24, he ended his 26-day fast after receiving written assurance from the government.
