Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) visited Delhi’s Wazirpur on Tuesday and assured justice to the 350 slum dwellers whose homes were recently bulldozed by the BJP-led government. AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, asking where these poor families would now find housing. He said that the BJP’s promise of *“Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan”* (Where there's a slum, there will be a house) was nothing more than a showpiece. While Delhi’s slums are being demolished, no concrete housing solutions are being provided.
Hundreds of families have become abruptly homeless in Wazirpur, despite repeated claims by BJP’s CM Rekha Gupta that slum settlements would be protected. Bharadwaj accused BJP leaders of winning the trust of slum dwellers by staying overnight in their settlements during the election season, only to snatch away their homes once in power.
The AAP leader stated that BJP has changed its promises—what was once an assurance is now reduced to bulldozers. Even basic amenities like small electronics shops in slums are being destroyed. The government has neither provided employment nor made arrangements for relocation.
Several areas in Delhi—Wazirpur, Okhla, Barapullah, Model Town, Bawana, and Rohini Sector-22—have witnessed demolition of slums. In Bawana, 300 slums were first set ablaze and then the entire area was cleared, leaving thousands of people homeless.
Bharadwaj launched a scathing attack on CM Rekha Gupta, accusing her of lying daily by claiming “No slum will be demolished.” He said the government is blatantly ignoring humanity by demolishing the homes and livelihoods of the poor. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi once promised *“Where there’s a slum, there’s a home”*, but now the government is openly lying.
AAP MLA Sanjay Jha said that if the Chief Minister had any compassion, she would immediately visit Wazirpur and witness the dire situation. He added that the sight of children being forced to live under the open sky after losing their homes is deeply distressing. He emphasized that this city cannot run on hollow political rhetoric.
Former MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi revealed what he called the BJP’s true colors. He said that BJP’s election-time “overnight stay” politics in the slums was just a show. Now, the harsh reality has emerged: *“Where there’s a slum, there’s now an empty ground.”* He pointed out that the law requires relocation and housing before demolishing slums, but the government has blatantly violated it.
AAP’s state president Bharadwaj made it clear that the party will fight this battle through legal means as well as raise the issue on the streets, in the Delhi Assembly, and even in Parliament. He affirmed that AAP will remain the voice of the slum dwellers and work tirelessly to ensure justice is delivered.
