National News: Following the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, two British families have alleged that the bodies handed over to them were misidentified. According to them, DNA test results have confirmed that the remains they received do not belong to their relatives.

DNA Reports Reveal Shocking Discrepancy

James Haley, a legal representative of the affected families in the UK, stated that 12 bodies were flown to Britain after the accident. However, DNA results for two of those bodies did not match with the corresponding families, casting doubt on the identification process carried out after the crash.

Catastrophic Crash Claimed 240+ Lives

The crash occurred on June 12, when Air India Flight AI171, en route from Ahmedabad to London, crashed within moments of takeoff. Out of 241 people onboard, only one person survived. The incident was so devastating that most of the passengers were burned beyond recognition, making DNA testing the primary method for identification.

Allegations Over Compensation Process

Despite the Tata Group’s announcement of a ₹1 crore compensation package for the victims' families, several have come forward claiming that they are facing delays and complications in receiving any form of relief.

According to UK-based law firm Stewarts, "Air India is posing complicated questions to grieving families without offering clear instructions. Victims are being pressured to reject compensation altogether."

Air India Responds, Denies All Claims

In response to the allegations, Air India issued a statement firmly denying any wrongdoing. “We are actively working to compensate the affected families as quickly as possible. Assistance began immediately after the crash, and we are committed to reaching every family in need,” the airline stated.

Ministry of External Affairs Issues Statement

India’s Ministry of External Affairs also weighed in on the controversy. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are closely monitoring the situation. Efforts are being made in coordination with UK authorities to ensure that all remains are returned to families with dignity. Any concerns raised are being addressed in partnership with the UK.”

Emotional Impact and Ethical Concerns

The misidentification of bodies has added another layer of grief to families already devastated by loss. Beyond logistical errors, the incident highlights the deep emotional trauma families suffer when they are unable to offer a proper farewell to their loved ones — an irreplaceable act of closure. The mishandling of body identification and complications in the compensation process have intensified the suffering of victims' families following the Ahmedabad plane crash. A transparent investigation, faster resolution, and compassionate handling of victims and their kin are urgently needed to restore trust and deliver justice.
