Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah officially inaugurated the headquarters of the National Turmeric Board in Nizamabad, Telangana, on Sunday. This event marks a significant step forward for turmeric farmers, especially after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to create the board during the 2023 Telangana elections.
Farmers in the region had been requesting a dedicated board for turmeric for many years. With this move, the government aims to support turmeric growers in everything from packaging and branding to marketing and international sales.
Speaking at the launch, Amit Shah highlighted India’s ambition to raise turmeric exports to $1 billion by the year 2030. He emphasised that India produces a special kind of turmeric, rich in curcumin, which is highly valued for its health benefits.
He also noted that turmeric is widely recognised as an anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer ingredient around the world. India’s strength lies in its high-quality turmeric, and promoting organic varieties will be a key focus going forward.
India is the top producer and exporter of turmeric, holding more than 62% of the global market. The country exported over 162,000 tonnes of turmeric valued at approximately $226 million in 2023–2024 alone.
The Board will focus on expanding global awareness about turmeric’s health value, encouraging research for new products, and helping farmers benefit from value-added products. It will also help improve food safety, set quality standards, and support skills training for growers.
20 Indian states have grown more than 30 varieties of turmeric, with Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu producing the majority of the crop. The new board will help connect traditional farming practices with modern demands and infrastructure, ensuring that farmers gain more from their hard work. Prime Minister Modi earlier stated that turmeric’s global demand has grown post-COVID, and this board will ensure Indian farmers are ready to meet it.
