A few months before the Bihar Assembly elections 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has once again increased the suspense over Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Regarding the Bihar chief ministerial candidate, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shah stated that it will take time to decide who will become the next CM's face in Bihar. However, he made it clear that Nitish will lead the Bihar elections. This answer of Shah's can cause a stir in Nitish's party, JDU. JDU is continuously campaigning for '25 to 30, Nitish again'. At the same time, Bihar BJP leaders like Dilip Jaiswal and Samrat Chaudhary have also claimed, 'Nitish again in 2025'.
In fact, the answer given by Amit Shah on the CM face in an interview given to Economic Times two days ago has heated up the political temperature. In the interview, he was asked whether the issue of the upcoming Bihar assembly elections will be development or caste. To this, the home minister replied that the issues of the election are always decided by the public. But we believe that development is the biggest issue for the people of Bihar.
After this, when Shah was asked who the NDA's CM candidate in Bihar was. In response, he stated, "Who will be the Chief Minister of Bihar? Time will tell, but we are going to contest the elections under the leadership of Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister."
Senior JDU politician and Nitish government minister of water resources Vijay Kumar Chaudhary stated on Saturday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated unequivocally that Nitish Kumar will lead the forthcoming assembly elections. While talking to journalists at Irrigation Bhawan in Patna, in response to a question, the minister said that Nitish will lead the NDA in Bihar.
This is not the first time that Amit Shah has increased the suspense about Nitish Kumar. About 6 months ago also, during an interview, he had given a vague answer to the question of NDA's CM candidate. He was asked whether the BJP will contest the elections under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. To this, Shah had replied that he is a disciplined worker of the party. Party decisions are not taken on such a platform. This will be considered in the meeting of the party parliamentary board, and then a decision will be taken.
After that statement of Shah, speculations started that BJP can implement the Maharashtra model in Bihar too. That is, if NDA returns to power in the Bihar elections to be held at the end of 2025, then some other leader can be made CM in place of Nitish. After the Maharashtra elections last year, the BJP had put Devendra Fadnavis of its party on the Chief Minister's chair in place of Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde.
However, after that statement of Amit Shah in December 2024, there was a stir in Bihar NDA. Two and a half months later, in February 2025, BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal reiterated Shah's statement and said that the CM face will be decided in the Parliamentary Board meeting. However, when the pressure from ally JDU increased, Jaiswal had to give clarification within a few hours. Later he clarified – 2025 again, Nitish.
