Samajwadi Party’s senior leader and former cabinet minister Mohammad Azam Khan has got big relief from the Allahabad High Court. The court has granted him bail in the well-known Rampur Quality Bar encroachment case. Justice Sameer Jain’s bench gave the decision after hearing both sides. With this order, Azam Khan has secured bail in all pending cases and is set to come out of jail. His release is expected to stir fresh political activity in Rampur and western Uttar Pradesh.
Azam Khan had earlier filed a bail application in the MP-MLA court of Rampur, but the court rejected his plea on 17 May 2025. After that, he knocked on the door of the Allahabad High Court.
In this case, arguments on behalf of Azam Khan were presented by lawyers Imran Ullah and Mohammad Khalid. The prosecution, describing the allegations as serious, opposed the bail. However, after the completion of arguments from both sides, the High Court had reserved its decision on 21 August, which has now been pronounced, granting bail.
On 21 November 2019, a bar owner named Gagan Arora lodged a complaint. The allegation was that there was an attempt to forcibly occupy the Quality Bar built on Said Nagar Hardoi Patti on the highway in the Civil Lines police station area of Rampur. On the written complaint of then Revenue Inspector Anangraj Singh, an FIR was registered. In the police investigation, apart from Azam Khan, his wife Dr. Tazeen Fatima, son and former MLA Abdullah Azam Khan, and then chairman Syed Zafar Ali Jafri were also made accused in this case.
