National News: Tension gripped Matampursi village of Nalanda district on Wednesday when angry villagers attacked Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar and Hilsa MLA Krishna Murari, alias Prem Mukhiya. Both leaders had gone to meet the families of nine people who recently lost their lives in a tragic road accident.
Two days earlier, nine passengers travelling in an auto were killed after being hit by a speeding truck. The incident left the entire village shaken. Locals allege that timely action by the administration could have prevented the deaths, and they have been demanding justice and compensation ever since.
According to eyewitnesses, the minister and MLA reached Matampursi on Wednesday afternoon and spent nearly half an hour consoling the bereaved families. However, as they were preparing to leave, a crowd of villagers gathered and began raising slogans. Within minutes, the protest turned violent. The angry mob reportedly attacked the leaders with sticks, forcing them and their security personnel to flee.
The situation escalated to such an extent that both Shravan Kumar and Krishna Murari had to run nearly one kilometer to save themselves. Their bodyguards, along with a few supporters, sustained injuries in the scuffle.
Locals say their anger had been brewing for several days. Despite the accident taking place in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s home district, no minister or senior official had visited the grieving families for almost five days. When Shravan Kumar and Krishna Murari finally arrived, the villagers vented their pent-up frustration.
Villagers claimed that they were completely ignored in the aftermath of the accident. “Nine people died in a single incident, yet no one came to share our grief. We felt abandoned,” a villager said. They alleged that the government only remembered them after public pressure mounted and accused officials of neglect and indifference.
Following the attack, the administration rushed in additional police forces to bring the situation under control. A large number of security personnel have now been deployed in and around Matampursi village. The police said they are investigating the matter and efforts are being made to identify those involved in the attack. District officials have appealed to the villagers to maintain peace, assuring them that their concerns will be addressed. However, the atmosphere in the village remains tense.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing mistrust between rural communities and government representatives, especially in times of tragedy when immediate administrative support is most crucial.
