National News: In a major decision aimed at empowering women, the Bihar government has approved 35% reservation in state government jobs exclusively for women who are native residents of Bihar. This landmark decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, just months before the upcoming assembly elections.

According to the government order, this reservation will apply to all levels of direct recruitment in all state departments and services, but only for women who are certified as permanent residents of Bihar.

A Historic Step for Women Empowerment

The move is being seen as a direct response to long-standing demands from various groups that women from other states should not be eligible for job reservations meant for Bihar residents. By ensuring that only native women benefit, the government hopes to create greater employment opportunities for local women while also improving the state's socio-economic indicators.

Officials clarified that the 35% reservation will not be extended to women from other states, even if they are otherwise eligible for state jobs.

CM Nitish Kumar Also Announces Youth Commission

Alongside this announcement, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also unveiled plans for the formation of a Bihar Youth Commission, a long-awaited initiative aimed at enhancing employment and skill development opportunities for the state’s young population.

“I’m pleased to announce the formation of the Bihar Youth Commission to provide guidance, training, and employment support to our youth,” said Kumar.

The commission will advise the government on policies related to youth welfare, work closely with various departments, and help coordinate education, employment, and skill development initiatives for Bihar’s youth.

Political and Social Implications

With this double announcement—one for women and one for youth—the Nitish Kumar-led government appears to be targeting two crucial demographics ahead of the 2025 elections. The decision is expected to have far-reaching political impact, as well as offer tangible economic benefits for women and young people across the state.
