Bihar: The NDA government has taken oath in Bihar under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. Barring the short three-year period of the Grand Alliance, the NDA has been in power in the state for most of the time since 2005. This change has once again brought the politics of Bihar back to its old equations.
At present, NDA governments of BJP or its allies are running in 20 states of the country. From the center to the state level, BJP's hold has become continuously stronger in the last decade. BJP or NDA is in power in Delhi, UP, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar.
Gujarat is the strongest fort of BJP. There has been no change of power here since Keshubhai Patel became the Chief Minister in 1995. Narendra Modi held the reins of the state from 2001 to 2014, and even after that the party's grip did not loosen. In the 2022 elections, BJP created a new record by winning 156 seats. Today Bhupendra Patel is the Chief Minister, and the party's dominance remains intact in the state.
BJP has been in power in Madhya Pradesh since 2003. Congress had made a comeback only for 15 months, but the government could not last long. Mohan Yadav is now the Chief Minister after the leadership of Shivraj Singh Chouhan for a long time. For more than two decades, the political direction of the state has been in the hands of BJP.
There has been a BJP government in Haryana since 2014. First Manohar Lal Khattar and now Naib Singh Saini is holding the leadership. This is the first time that the party has won three consecutive elections. Yogi Adityanath has been the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh since 2017. BJP returned to power with a thumping majority twice in a row, which is considered rare in a state like UP.
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, and West Bengal—these are the states where there are currently opposition governments. BJP is out of power in these states.
The overall picture shows that the hold of BJP and NDA has become very strong in many states. In some states it has been in power for as long as a generation, while in new states too the party's presence has grown rapidly. This trend shows that BJP's influence in national politics will remain important in the times to come.
