New Delhi: A new era is about to begin in the Indian education system. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is carrying out comprehensive reforms in the methods of teaching and evaluation in line with the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Now the old trend of passing in schools only by rote learning will end. Instead, emphasis will be placed on students' actual understanding and practical skills. CBSE is soon going to launch a state-of-the-art online platform, which will assess students' in-depth understanding of subjects. This platform will not only reveal how much children have learned but also make it clear how they can apply this knowledge to real-life challenges. This will better prepare students for essential 21st-century skills—such as problem solving, creativity, and digital literacy.
In this new initiative, examination will not be made synonymous with fear but an integral part of learning. As per the main recommendations of NEP 2020, the evaluation system should be shifted from rote memorization to understanding and application. In this direction, CBSE has developed a special examination format for all students of classes 3, 5 and 8, named Structured Assessment for Analysis of Learning (SAFL)—that is, Structured Assessment for Learning Analysis. SAFL aims to test students' understanding of fundamental concepts, logical thinking and analytical ability. This will enable teachers and school management to easily identify which areas children need additional support, thereby strengthening the personalized learning process.
NEP 2020 clearly states that the examination should be such that it shows the progress of the students and not just test the memory power. Following the same principle, CBSE has already implemented the competency-based assessment framework for classes 6 to 10. In this framework, special focus is given to core subjects like Science, Mathematics and English, where students' conceptual clarity and practical application are tested. Now this change is being brought at the primary level also through Safal.
The SAFL assessment for classes 3, 5 and 8 will prove to be a milestone. Its main elements are as follows:
This plan of CBSE is not a one-time change but a strategy to continuously improve the quality of education. Data obtained from digital assessments will be used to improve learning outcomes. Teachers have been instructed to take advantage of the Safal report to provide assistance in the classroom and communicate effectively with parents. In the future, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools will track the progress of students, analyze their interests and give the right career guidance. This change will not only empower the students but will also bring the entire education system in line with global standards.
Parents and teachers are excited by this reform, as it will become a real medium to prepare children for the future. This platform, which will be launched soon, is expected to bring a new revolution in Indian education.
