Escalation After Pahalgam Attack
The brutal terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 lives, has pushed India-Pakistan relations to a precarious edge. India, attributing the assault to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has intensified its strategic response through a series of high-level meetings in New Delhi. These discussions, involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, signal a robust counter-terrorism strategy, raising fears in Pakistan of imminent retaliation.

India’s Diplomatic and Military Moves
India’s response has been swift and multifaceted. The government suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, closed the Attari-Wagah border, and expelled Pakistani diplomats, escalating tensions. Modi’s directive granting the armed forces “complete operational freedom” to choose targets and timing has alarmed Islamabad, with Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khwaja Asif warning of a potential Indian military strike. Ceasefire violations along the Line of Control, with nightly exchanges of fire, further underscore the volatile situation.

Pakistan’s Defensive Posture
Pakistan, denying involvement in the attack, has scrambled to bolster its defenses, reinforcing troops and scrambling jets along the border. Islamabad’s countermeasures include suspending Indian visas, closing airspace to Indian flights, and threatening to abandon bilateral treaties like the 1972 Simla Agreement. Asif’s call for a neutral investigation has done little to ease tensions, with Pakistan viewing India’s actions as a prelude to conflict.

Global Concerns Mount
The international community watches anxiously as two nuclear-armed neighbors edge closer to confrontation. While Modi briefs world leaders, diplomats fear a miscalculation could spark a broader conflict. With India’s resolve to crush terrorism and Pakistan’s heightened alert, the border remains a flashpoint, teetering on the brink of escalation
