Delhi: While the intense heat of Delhi-NCR on Wednesday afternoon made people sweat, by evening the weather suddenly changed its mood and a devastating storm gripped the entire area. This fierce storm and rain, which lasted for about 20 minutes, wreaked havoc in the capital region. The speed of strong winds reached 79 to 80 kilometers per hour, making the situation horrific.

Sudden change in weather, chaos created

With the clouds gathering in the sky, strong winds picked up force and the weather suddenly changed with hailstorm. People had to look for roofs and safe places. At many places, trees and electric poles fell due to the high speed of the wind. A person died due to the fall of a pole in Nizamuddin area, while 22-year-old Azhar lost his life due to the fall of a tree in Gokulpuri. Such an accident created panic in the entire area.

Traffic halted, roads turned into ponds

Storm and rain submerged the roads of Delhi-NCR. Waterlogging and falling trees caused traffic jams. Movement on many main routes came to a halt, due to which common people had to face a lot of difficulties. Long queues of vehicles were formed in many areas, people were stranded. Strong winds also blew away a big hoarding in Noida Sector 37, which became the reason for avoiding a major accident.

Storm shadow on air flights

The effect of weather was clearly visible at Delhi airport as well. Many flights were delayed or cancelled. IndiGo flight 6E2142 had to make an emergency landing after getting caught in storm turbulence in Srinagar. The front part of the flight was damaged, but the lives of passengers and crew members remained safe, which can only be called the pilot's prudence.

Metro services also disrupted

Due to strong winds, debris fell on the track near Nizamuddin on the Yellow Line of Delhi Metro, due to which the metro service had to be temporarily stopped. DMRC has promptly started relief work and has assured to restore services soon. Passengers faced inconvenience due to this obstruction but safety was given priority.

Weather department issued warning

Weather department clarified that this storm was temporary but its intensity and strong winds caused damage. The department has advised to remain alert and keep getting information about the weather. Also, incidents of glass breaking have been reported in some areas due to hailstorm and strong winds.
