The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, resuming in June 2025 after a six-year pause, will be significantly pricier due to China’s decision to increase fees by ₹20,000, raising the per-pilgrim cost to approximately ₹2.05 lakh. The pilgrimage, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, will follow a new 10-day vehicle-accessible route via Tanakpur, Uttarakhand, sparking both excitement and concern among devotees.

China’s Fee Hike
China, which controls access to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet, has imposed a ₹20,000 fee increase for Indian pilgrims, citing infrastructure maintenance and border security costs. This adds to the existing expenses of ₹1.85 lakh, which cover travel, lodging, food, and medical tests. The hike, announced on May 19, 2025, has drawn criticism from pilgrims who view it as a financial barrier to a sacred journey. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs is negotiating with China to ease the burden, but no concessions have been secured yet.

New Tanakpur Route
The 2025 Yatra introduces a streamlined route from Tanakpur, Uttarakhand, replacing the arduous trekking paths via Lipulekh Pass or Nathu La.  The route passes through Pithoragarh and Dharchula before entering Tibet, covering 1,500 km round-trip. While the shorter duration is a boon, the higher costs have dampened some pilgrims’ enthusiasm.

Impact on Pilgrims
The fee hike may deter middle-class devotees, with many expressing frustration on social media. “This is a spiritual journey, not a luxury tour,” said Anil Sharma, a prospective pilgrim. The government plans to cap the Yatra at 1,500 participants, prioritizing those above 60, but the increased costs could limit participation. Subsidies or staggered payment options are under discussion to support pilgrims.

Looking Ahead
Despite the financial strain, the Tanakpur route promises a safer, faster Yatra, aligning with India’s infrastructure push in border areas. Devotees hope for diplomatic efforts to lower fees, ensuring this sacred pilgrimage remains within reach. For now, the 2025 Yatra blends modern convenience with spiritual devotion, albeit at a steeper price.
