Former West Bengal minister Udayan Guha arrested; accused of attacking Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata: Following the loss of power for Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders are being arrested one by one in connection with past cases. In this sequence of events, the West Bengal Police arrested former minister Udayan Guha from Kolkata's Phoolbagan area on Wednesday. 

Why was the former MLA arrested? 

According to reports, the former MLA was arrested by the Cooch Behar Police on charges of extortion. However, the police have not yet disclosed the specific case for which Udayan has been arrested.
According to a 'Hindustan Times' report, Udayan is accused of raising crores of rupees from the market under the pretext of constructing a children's unit at a government hospital but subsequently engaging in financial irregularities. The complainant in the case, Rupam Saha, stated that this action was necessary. He alleged that after the 2021 Assembly elections, Udayan collected between ₹20 crore and ₹25 crore but executed work worth only ₹40 lakh to ₹50 lakh.

What did Suvendu Adhikari say? 

Suvendu Adhikari had previously accused Udayan Guha of attacking his convoy in September of last year. Furthermore, the then-Leader of the Opposition had accused the Mamata government of attempting to shield Udayan. However, the police have not yet provided details regarding the specific case for which the former minister has been arrested.
The then-Leader of the Opposition had alleged, "On August 5, at the behest of Udayan Guha, his goons attacked my vehicle in the Khagrabari area of ​​Cooch Behar. The state government and the West Bengal Police tried to suppress the incident. The police registered an FIR 'suo motu' but cunningly omitted Udayan Guha's name from it. I will not let the guilty escape easily."
Suvendu Adhikari had also approached the High Court regarding this matter. Suvendu had accused the police of shielding Udayan in this matter. Subsequently, the High Court directed the police to clarify the difference between the two FIRs and whether the complaint lodged by the officer had raised suspicions of a larger conspiracy. The IGP was instructed to submit an affidavit regarding this matter by September 10.
