National News: In a significant development aimed at enhancing India’s defense preparedness, the Gun Carriage Factory (GCF) in Jabalpur has been entrusted with an expanded production target. The factory, which was initially tasked with manufacturing 18 Light Field Guns (LFGs), will now produce 36 units. This decision was made in response to a surge in demand from the Indian Army following the recent Operation Sindoor.

First Consignment Nearing Completion, Second Phase to Begin Soon

According to officials at GCF, production of the first batch of 18 LFGs is nearly complete, and these guns are expected to be delivered to the Army in the coming months. The manufacturing of the remaining 18 units has been included in next year’s production targets.

This marks the first large-scale order for LFGs received by GCF in nearly nine years. Chief General Manager Rajiv Gupta stated that this development is not only a moment of pride for the factory but also a tangible step toward ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’—India’s vision for self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

Dhanush Cannon Set for Enhanced Capabilities

In addition to LFGs, GCF is also working on upgrading the ‘Dhanush’ artillery system, based on the Bofors design. The factory is enhancing the cannon’s barrel from the existing 45-caliber to 52-caliber, significantly boosting its range and firepower.

A prototype of the upgraded Dhanush cannon has already undergone successful testing at Pokhran and Balasore. The cannon demonstrated exceptional performance in terms of range, accuracy, and durability. Officials confirmed that full-scale production will commence soon based on the positive results from the trials.

Unique Features of the Light Field Gun

The Light Field Gun is a 105 mm modern field artillery system designed to combine lightweight construction with high firepower. Operated by just two personnel—a gunner and a loader—it is especially suited for deployment in hilly, remote, and border regions due to its portability and agility.

The gun can fire up to six rounds per minute and is easier to maintain compared to heavier artillery systems. Its mobility and quick response capability make it a valuable asset in fast-paced combat scenarios.

With growing operational requirements and increasing emphasis on indigenous defense production, GCF’s expanded role in manufacturing both LFGs and upgraded Dhanush cannons is a timely and strategic move. These advanced artillery systems are expected to significantly strengthen India’s border defense and contribute to the broader goal of achieving self-reliance in defense technology.
