New Delhi: The last message of Indian Marine Engineer Heramb Karmarkar, who lost his life in the Iranian attack on a merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz, has come to light. Pune resident Heramb had sent a message to his family shortly before the attack informing them that his ship had safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz. Little did the family know that this would prove to be his last message. Shortly thereafter the ship was attacked, and Heramb died. This incident has shocked the entire country including his family.

What was Heramb's last message?

According to family members, Heramb Karmarkar had written in his mobile message that the ship had safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and there was no reason to worry. The family also heaved a sigh of relief, but after some time the news of the attack on the ship reached. After this, the family did not get any information about him for several hours. Officials later confirmed Heramb's death.

How did the ship get attacked?

The merchant ship GFX Galaxy, which Heramb was posted on, was a Cyprus-flagged commercial vessel and was sailing off the coast of Oman. During this time the ship was attacked. Several Indian crew members were present on the ship. After the attack, relief and rescue operations were launched, in which most of the Indian sailors were evacuated safely. However, Heramb lost his life in this attack.

What information did the government give?

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, 10 Indians aboard the ship are safe. An Indian was missing for some time. Heramb Karmarkar's death was later confirmed. The government expressed deep sorrow and expressed sympathy to the family. The Indian Embassy is in constant touch with the local administration and the ship company.

What did the family demand from the government?

Heramb's father-in-law has appealed to the central government to bring his son-in-law's mortal remains to India as soon as possible so that the last rites can be performed with full respect. The family has demanded all possible help from the government.

Had India already expressed strong opposition?

India has already expressed concern over attacks on commercial ships in Hormuz. Indian sailors were also affected in the recent attacks on two more ships. After this, India summoned the Deputy Chief of the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest. India has clearly stated that targeting merchant ships on international sea lanes is unacceptable and such attacks should stop immediately.
