Kolkata: Ratna Debnath - the mother of the rape victim from Kolkata's R.G. Kar Hospital and a BJP MLA - met Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday. Following this meeting, she took to social media to take a jibe at TMC chief Mamata Banerjee regarding her electoral defeat.
Ratna Debnath, the BJP MLA representing the Panihati constituency, confirmed that she had met with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. In a post, she stated: "Today, I held a meeting with the Chief Minister on the 14th floor of Nabanna. The power of honesty is immense. One must fight against injustice with patience. Today, both Mamata (Banerjee) and I are in mourning. I have lost my only daughter and have dedicated myself to the service of the people, while she has lost her chair."
Ratna asserted that Mamata Banerjee and her team would have to face even more tragic consequences - they just have to wait and see. It is worth noting that last week, the Calcutta High Court ordered the formation of a three-member SIT (Special Investigation Team) under the CBI to probe this case. This incident had sparked widespread outrage, not only within the state but also across the entire medical fraternity nationwide.
Debnath has repeatedly alleged that numerous individuals are directly or indirectly involved in this case, and that not all suspects have been brought under the ambit of the investigation. According to sources, she had previously sent a sealed letter to Chief Minister Adhikari, demanding action against specific individuals whom she wished to see brought under investigation.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Debnath stated that despite having become an MLA, all joy has vanished from her life, and her sole objective remains securing justice for her daughter.
She remarked, "Although I have become an MLA, all happiness has departed from my life. My only objective is justice; the names I submitted to the Chief Minister have, in fact, already been handed over to the investigative agencies."
Both she and her husband had consistently raised questions regarding the conduct of the previous Trinamool government and the police concerning the investigation into this case. During the recent election campaign, the TMC accused her of using derogatory language against Mamata Banerjee and even lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission.
It is worth noting that on August 9, 2024, the body of a post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall on the third floor of Kolkata's R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. She had been brutally murdered following her rape. The Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, one of their civic volunteers, on charges of raping and subsequently murdering the victim.
Following the Trinamool Congress's defeat in the West Bengal elections, the BJP government announced that the investigation into the case would be expedited and that justice would be ensured.
