National News: As 2025 reaches its halfway point, India finds itself in a stretch where nearly every month has brought a new tragedy. From deadly stampedes and catastrophic plane crashes to war-like tensions at the border and devastating natural disasters, the country’s resilience has been pushed to its limits.

From Devotion to Celebration—Crowds Turn Fatal

The year began on a grim note. A deadly stampede at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj in the early hours of January 29 left 30 people dead and more than 60 injured. The chaos unfolded at 2 AM when overcrowding and weak barricades caused panic near the Sangam area, where devotees had gathered in large numbers.

In February, tragedy struck again when a stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway Station, resulting in 18 deaths and 15 injuries. The victims, mostly Kumbh-bound pilgrims, were caught in a chaotic situation caused by confusion over two similarly named trains and an overcrowded platform.

In June, joyous celebrations in Bengaluru took a tragic turn when massive crowds gathered outside Chinnaswamy Stadium to mark the city's historic first IPL title victory. Amid the overwhelming rush, a stampede broke out, leaving 11 dead and 33 injured. Less than three weeks later, another tragedy struck during the Rath Yatra in Puri, where a similar crowd surge resulted in the deaths of 3 people and injured over 50. These back-to-back incidents have once again sparked urgent discussions around public safety measures and crowd control at major events.

Border Tensions Spark Four-Day Military Standoff

In early May, a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 civilians. In retaliation, India launched air strikes on May 7, targeting nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, killing over 100 militants, according to government sources.

Pakistan retaliated with drone and missile attacks on Indian border cities in Punjab and Rajasthan, causing casualties and infrastructure damage. For four days, tensions rose to near-war levels. A ceasefire was declared on May 11, but relations between the two countries remain strained and fragile.

Air India Tragedy: Crash Moments After Takeoff

India faced its worst aviation tragedy in over a decade on March 22, when Air India Flight AI 171, en route to London, crashed just five minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport. The Boeing 787-8, carrying 242 passengers and crew, went down in a residential area, striking two buildings and causing extensive loss of life and property. The tragedy sparked widespread concerns over aviation safety standards and the effectiveness of regulatory oversight in India.

Floods and Landslides Ravage Northeast and Himalayan States

While political and man-made crises unfolded, nature added its own fury. From late May into June, relentless monsoon rains caused massive flooding and landslides across Northeast India. At least 47 people were killed in rain-related incidents across Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland. Hundreds of thousands were displaced, and widespread damage was reported to critical infrastructure.

Simultaneously, from June 22–29, Himachal Pradesh faced destructive flash floods, resulting in 17 deaths and an estimated ₹300 crore in damages. Nearby Uttarakhand and other northern states continue to face the brunt of heavy rains and landslides, with the monsoon far from over.

What Lies Ahead? A Nation at the Crossroads

The first half of 2025 has thrown India into a storm of grief, instability, and unanswered questions. From administrative lapses to insufficient disaster preparedness, each crisis has exposed vulnerabilities in governance and infrastructure.

As the country steps into the second half of the year, uncertainty remains. With the monsoon season still ongoing and global geopolitical tensions far from resolved, India is staring into the unknown—mourning its losses but not giving up hope.
