New Delhi: The armies of India and China on Wednesday held "active and intensive" discussions on controlling the western border area. China's Defense Ministry said that in this meeting held on October 25 at the meeting venue fixed on the Indian side, both sides agreed to maintain regular contacts. Talks will continue through military and diplomatic channels.

Where and when did the meeting take place?

The talks concluded on October 25 at the meeting point designated by India. Military officers of both countries sat face-to-face and discussed the situation in the western sector in detail. China called it a positive step.

What was discussed in Eastern Ladakh?

In July, the situation on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh was discussed under the WMCC (Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination). China described it as "open and frank." Both sides had agreed to hold the next round at the end of the year.

What did India say?

The Ministry of External Affairs expressed satisfaction over the July meeting. It was said that there is peace in the border areas, due to which bilateral relations are gradually normalizing. This platform is proving helpful in maintaining peaceful relationships.

Signs of improvement in relations?

India-China relations are improving after the end of the military standoff in eastern Ladakh in October 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin in August—the PM's first visit to China in seven years.

What came out of the Modi-Xi talks?

Prime Minister Modi described the meeting as "productive." Both sides gave priority to maintaining peace on the border and resolved to increase cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, equal benefits, and sensitivity.

Why didn't the soldiers retreat?

Despite the agreement to reduce tension, deployment on the frontline continues. About 50 to 60 thousand soldiers of both the countries are still standing in eastern Ladakh.

What changed after Galwan?

The 2020 Galwan Valley conflict had taken relations to a historic low. 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers were martyred in this. Now efforts are being made to gradually restore confidence, but there is still a long way to go for complete normalcy.
