New Delhi: In a significant move, India has been given 6-month exemption from American sanctions on the Chabahar Port in Iran, as per the Ministry of External Affairs. It got implemented on September 29.
It is worthy to be mentioned here that earlier US President Donald Trump administration on September 18, has stated that it would cancel the sanctions waiver which was issued in 2018 for function at the kye port in central Asia.
Meanwhile, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, answering to the same, said, “US grants India six months exemption from American sanctions on Chabahar port.” Jaiswal further talking about India’s oil imports from Russia, said, “Our decisions naturally take into account evolving dynamics of global oil market.”
Jaiswal, further on the question of effect of US sanctions on Russian oil companies said, “We are studying implications of recent US sanctions on Russian oil companies.”
It is to be noted here that the Trump's administration has recently announced a 50 percent tariff on all Indian imports. Meanwhile, an additional 25 percent penalty was imposed on India over India's Russian crude oil purchase. Stating their point, US has argued that India's oil purchase with Moscow indirectly result into financing Russia’s war in Ukraine.
