New Delhi: India wants rockets that can carry heavier satellites to higher orbits. Right now LVM3 can carry only four tons. Bigger communication satellites need more power. India uses foreign rockets for such satellites. That costs huge money. India also loses business to other countries. A stronger engine will solve these problems.
Russian agency Roscosmos will give the RD-191M engine. The engine runs on liquid oxygen and kerosene. It is called a semi-cryogenic engine. It gives more thrust and more lifting power. Russia may also share technology for making it. India will not depend on anyone after that. It will help future human missions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is on a two-day India visit. The deal may be signed during this visit. Talks were going on for many years. Earlier India bought Russian cryogenic engines for GSLV. But later supply stopped due to global politics. This time India wants technology also. That makes the deal very special.
ISRO plans to replace LVM3’s second stage engine with this Russian engine. It will give better push in space. Payload capacity will jump from four tons to five or more tons. Later it can even reach seven tons to GEO. More power means more earning chances. NewSpace India can offer launches to other countries.
ISRO is already working on its own semi-cryogenic engine. It is called SCE-2000. It also uses kerosene and oxygen. But progress has been slow. India wants results fast. Big satellites cannot wait. So Russia’s help will save time. India can still continue its own project.
India wants to send humans to space on its own. India also wants its own space station. For that a very heavy rocket is needed. RD-191M engine can make LVM3 stronger. Later India can build even bigger rockets. These steps will make India a major space country. Future missions will become easier and cheaper.
India will earn more by launching heavy satellites. India will not depend on others for big rocket power. New technology will come to India. Engineers will get more skills. Russia and India will also become stronger partners in space. This one deal can change India’s position in the world of space technology.
