New Delhi: Amid speculations regarding the ongoing trade deal between India and America, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a phone conversation on Tuesday. This conversation has taken place at a time when there have been long-standing differences between the two countries regarding trade and slight tension is also being seen in the relations.

What issues were discussed in the talks?

Apart from trade, the two leaders also talked in detail about defense and security cooperation. Along with this, there was also discussion on taking forward partnership in areas like critical minerals, nuclear cooperation and energy. It is believed that this conversation is considered important in deciding the direction of future talks and possible agreement.

Why is there an atmosphere regarding trade deal?

In recent months, there has been no agreement between India and America on many trade related issues. The two sides have different views on tariffs, market access and some technical rules. For this reason the bilateral trade agreement has not yet been finalized.

What signals did Sergio Gore give?

A day before this phone call, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore had given a statement that both countries are actively negotiating to complete the trade deal. He also said that “further talks on trade” were scheduled for Tuesday. After this, the conversation between Jaishankar and Rubio further strengthened these discussions.

What did Jaishankar say about the talks?

While giving information on social media, Foreign Minister Jaishankar said that his conversation with Rubio was good and positive. He said the two discussed in detail issues like trade, critical minerals, nuclear cooperation, defense and energy and agreed to remain in touch in the future.

What was the reaction from the American side?

Sergio Gore also said on social media that the conversation between Rubio and Jaishankar was positive. According to him, the two leaders discussed next steps in bilateral trade talks, critical minerals, and a possible meeting next month.

Why has the agreement not been reached yet?

Despite several rounds of talks, no agreement could be reached on the trade deal. Recently, US Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick had claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not call President Trump, hence the agreement could not be reached in 2025. However, the Indian government immediately rejected this statement and called it false.
