Jorhat: An AN-32 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force met with an accident on Saturday at Jorhat Air Force Station in Assam. The aircraft landed normally on the runway but caught fire shortly after landing. The fire brigade present at the airbase took immediate action and brought the fire under control. All the crew members and other personnel present in the aircraft at the time of the incident were successful in getting out safely. The Air Force has confirmed the accident and ordered an investigation.
According to the information, the plane had landed at Jorhat airbase after completing its regular flight. No major problems were reported during the landing, but smoke was seen rising from a portion of the aircraft moments after reaching the runway. Within no time the fire spread and an emergency had to be declared at the airbase. The rescue teams present on the spot became active immediately.
Fire tender units of the Air Force station were alerted immediately after the accident. As soon as information about the fire was received, the rescue team surrounded the plane from all sides and controlled the flames within a short time. Officials say that due to timely action taken the fire did not get a chance to spread much. This prevented major damage.
According to Air Force sources, all the personnel on board the aircraft were evacuated safely. There is no report of anyone being seriously injured. Initial reports have also ruled out any loss of life. This is the reason why despite the incident, there is a situation of relief. However, as a precautionary measure, health check-up of all the concerned personnel was conducted.
AN-32 is counted among the most reliable transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force. It is used to transport troops, military equipment, relief material and logistics. This aircraft has been performing important responsibilities for a long time in Northeast India and high altitude areas. Its operation is considered possible even at airports with difficult weather and limited facilities.
Immediately after the incident, experts began examining the technical condition of the aircraft. At the initial level, it is believed that the fire may have started due to some technical fault, but no reason has been officially given yet. Only after the investigation is completed will it be clear whether the accident occurred due to mechanical fault, fuel system problem or some other reason.
The Air Force has ordered a detailed investigation into the matter. The investigation team will study flight records, technical logbooks, maintenance reports and crew statements. It will also be seen how such a situation developed after landing when the plane had safely reached the runway. Further action will be decided after the investigation report comes.
The Indian Air Force conducts technical review and maintenance of its aircraft from time to time, yet accidents have sometimes occurred due to technical reasons. This incident in Jorhat has also been included in the list of such cases. However, this time the biggest relief was that all the people present on the plane were safe. Now all eyes are on the investigation report, which will reveal the real causes of the accident.
