National News: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has sharply condemned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent comments about the late Arun Jaitley. She called his statement "irresponsible" and said that such comments only harm the Congress party itself.
Rahul Gandhi had claimed that Arun Jaitley had threatened him on behalf of the government during the protests against the farm laws. Sitharaman denied this and accused Gandhi of making baseless statements without thinking. She said this kind of behavior has become a regular habit for him.
Rohan Jaitley, son of the late Arun Jaitley, also rejected Rahul Gandhi’s claims. He highlighted that his father had passed away before the farm laws were even brought into effect. He said Rahul Gandhi’s statement is factually incorrect and misleading.
Rahul Gandhi also made serious allegations against the Election Commission, accusing it of being involved in voter fraud, adding further controversy to his recent remarks.
Nirmala Sitharaman took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice her disapproval. She said Rahul Gandhi speaks without any responsibility and often targets people without evidence, including those who are no longer alive to defend themselves.
She called his remarks about Arun Jaitley “shameful” and added that India needs a strong opposition, but such irresponsible behavior only weakens both his party and the country. She questioned whether Rahul Gandhi even realizes or cares about the damage he causes.
Rahul Gandhi made the controversial statement during the annual legal convention of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Saturday.
He said, “I remember the time when I was actively opposing the farm laws. Arun Jaitley—though he is no longer alive, and maybe I shouldn’t say this—was sent to threaten me. He told me that if I continue opposing the government, they will take action against me.”
According to Rahul, he responded to Jaitley by saying, “I don’t think you realize who you’re talking to.” We are Congress people. We are not cowards.”
Rahul Gandhi’s comments have sparked political reactions and renewed debates over his approach in public life. The BJP has accused him of using false statements for political gain, while his own party remains silent on the issue so far.
Nirmala Sitharaman ended her response by saying that India deserves mature and responsible political leaders, not careless and divisive statements.
