National News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, holding him responsible for what he termed a “historic blunder” in signing the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. Speaking at the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting in Delhi, Modi alleged that Nehru entered into the agreement without consulting either Parliament or his own Cabinet colleagues, compromising India’s long-term interests.

According to sources present at the meeting, the Prime Minister said Nehru was more concerned about polishing his global image than safeguarding the country’s resources. “More than 80 percent of the water was given to Pakistan under this agreement, leaving India with limited options,” Modi reportedly remarked.

Treaty under fresh scrutiny

The Prime Minister’s comments come in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, after which the government has reportedly put the implementation of the Indus Water Treaty under review. Modi indicated that his administration is committed to “washing away the sins of that era” by correcting historical mistakes that have cost India dearly.

He also cited an incident where Nehru confided in one of his colleagues that he believed the agreement would pave the way for resolving other disputes with Pakistan. “But it did not happen,” Modi said, emphasizing that instead of resolving tensions, the treaty gave Pakistan a strategic advantage.

CP Radhakrishnan felicitated

At the same meeting, Prime Minister Modi felicitated NDA’s Vice Presidential nominee CP Radhakrishnan. At 67, Radhakrishnan is a veteran BJP leader with decades of public service and is currently serving as the Governor of Maharashtra.

The Prime Minister lauded Radhakrishnan’s experience and dedication, noting that his long career in public life has been marked by humility and a people-centric approach. Modi expressed confidence that his elevation to the post of Vice President would “enrich the nation” and strengthen parliamentary democracy.

Call for unanimous support

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju told reporters that PM Modi urged all parties, including the opposition, to extend unanimous support to CP Radhakrishnan’s candidature. Stressing the importance of consensus in parliamentary institutions, the Prime Minister urged MPs across party lines to rise above politics and ensure that the Vice Presidential election reflects unity in the national interest.

With the NDA holding a clear majority in both Houses of Parliament, Radhakrishnan’s election is considered all but certain. However, the opposition INDIA bloc has hinted at fielding its own candidate, setting the stage for a possible contest.
