National New: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar surprised many by stepping down from his post, with President Droupadi Murmu promptly accepting his resignation. While he cited health concerns, the opposition claims political pressure forced the move. Congress leader Sukhdev Bhagat even alleged that the resignation was pre-planned, calling it a scripted decision rather than a sudden development.
On the day of the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament, the opposition presented a notice of impeachment in the Rajya Sabha to remove Supreme Court judge Yashwant Verma. This step was taken after a huge amount of cash was found in Justice Verma's house. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar accepted this notice and directed further action.
According to NDTV's report, after this development, the central government called the vice president, in which the matter of this notice was discussed. It is being said that a heated debate took place in the conversation, and Dhankhar cited his constitutional rights. Soon after this, speculations of bringing a no-confidence motion against him intensified, due to which the opposition had already targeted him. Perhaps this is why he himself thought it appropriate to resign.
The interesting thing is that both the ruling party and the opposition are ready to remove Justice Verma. 152 MPs from the ruling party in the Lok Sabha and 63 MPs from the opposition in the Rajya Sabha supported the impeachment motion. But the real controversy is about who should get the credit for this. This is the reason that despite the general consensus against Justice Verma, a situation of politics and conflict arose.
Dhankhar's resignation is not just due to health reasons but has emerged as a big signal amid constitutional responsibilities, political pressure, and politics of credit. Now all eyes are on the selection of the new vice president and further proceedings in Parliament.
