Fire in ICU: A fierce fire broke out in the ICU ward of the Trauma Center of Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. It is reported that the fire was caused by a short circuit. Six patients died in this accident, while many serious patients were safely taken out. Doctors, nurses and firefighters together managed to control the fire after hours of hard work.
Dr. Anurag Dhakad, in-charge of the Trauma Center, stated that a short circuit appears to be the cause of the fire. He said, "Our patients were already in very critical condition. Most were in coma. The toxic smoke from the fire worsened their condition. We tried to shift them to the ICU downstairs, but could not save six patients." The deceased include two women and four men, while the condition of five patients is still reported to be critical. A total of 24 patients were evacuated safely.
Upon learning of the incident, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma immediately rushed to the hospital and took stock of the situation. Rajasthan Minister Jawahar Singh Bedham said that this is a very unfortunate incident. "A short circuit caused a fire in the ICU. The Chief Minister himself has arrived at the scene. Most of the patients have been rescued and are being treated on a priority basis," he said.
At present, the hospital administration has ordered an inquiry into the fire. The police and forensic team are also trying to find out the real cause of the fire. After the accident, security arrangements and fire systems are being reviewed in the entire hospital premises, so that such an incident does not happen again in future.
