Jaitpur accident: Heavy rains this morning led to a horrific tragedy in the Jaitpur area of southeast Delhi. 7 people died on the spot, while many others were seriously injured after a wall of about 100 feet collapsed. Immediately after the incident, police, fire brigade, and NDRF teams got involved in relief and rescue work. The soil had weakened due to heavy rains, and the quality of construction is also said to be questionable.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a red alert and warned of 100-150 mm of rain. After the accident, there was chaos in the entire area; many slums were affected, and many families became homeless.
Teams that reached the spot have so far recovered 5 bodies, while 2 others are feared trapped under the debris. The condition of 4 of the injured is critical, and they have been put on ventilators. Initial reports have revealed that there was no warning or evacuation arrangement in the area before the rains. Experts believe that old and unplanned construction, as well as poor drainage systems, are the main reasons for this tragedy.
Rekha Gupta expressed grief over the incident and assured full support to the victims’ families. Temporary relief camps have been set up for the affected families, where food, drinking water, blankets, and medical services are being provided. Delhi Fire Services has deployed two fire engines, a rescue vehicle, and heavy machinery for relief work, working round the clock.
The administration has ordered an inquiry and assured strict action against the culprits responsible for the negligence. Local leaders and NGOs have also stepped in, distributing aid and helping coordinate between the victims and government agencies for faster rehabilitation.
The Meteorological Department has predicted more rain in the next 24 hours, which may hinder relief and rescue work in the affected area. Local people are still searching for their relatives among the debris, hoping for some miracle.
Viral videos on social media are highlighting the horror of this accident, drawing nationwide attention and calls for better safety measures. Authorities have advised people living near weak structures to move to safer places immediately. Disaster management teams remain on high alert, preparing for any emergency as the weather situation remains unpredictable.
