Corona Updates: The coronavirus, which had once returned from our doorstep as a nightmare, has again knocked on the door of many corners of Asia. In India, the knock is still slow, but its echo has reached the ears of the government.
The new version of the virus JN.1—a mutation of Omicron BA.2.86—is now the center of discussion. This variant has taken the rate of infection to new heights in Singapore and Hong Kong. Experts believe that its transmission capacity is fast, although so far the rate of severe symptoms due to it in India has been very low.
Government data says that only 164 Covid-19 cases have been reported in India since May 12. Of these, the highest number of cases are in Kerala, a total of 69. This was followed by 44 cases in Maharashtra, 34 in Tamil Nadu, 8 in Karnataka, 6 in Gujarat, and 3 in Delhi. One patient each has been reported in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim.
The death of two Covid-positive patients at Mumbai's KEM hospital suddenly raised concerns. But when their medical history was investigated, the truth came out: one patient was already suffering from oral cancer and the other from nephrotic syndrome. The BMC clearly said, "The cause of death was not corona, but their complex health conditions."
The most reassuring thing so far is that the Government of India is not panicking but is alert and organized. The Health Ministry is in constant touch with the states. Measures like testing, tracking, and genomic sequencing are being reactivated. Officials have clearly said, "The situation is under control, but there is no scope for negligence."
People need to be cautious, not afraid. Wearing masks, avoiding crowds, and getting tested even for mild symptoms. This is the responsibility of the times. This fight is no longer the government's, but ours is a shared one.
Conclusion: Responsibility is important, not fear
This time the virus may be weak, but our carelessness can give it strength. India has fought and won against the pandemic before, and this time we have experience, vaccines, and wisdom - all three.
But the question still remains: are we really cautious?
