National News: For the first time in Indian judicial history, a judge from Haryana will occupy the highest judicial post. Justice Surya Kant, a senior Supreme Court judge, has been officially appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. His elevation marks a proud moment for Haryana and especially Hisar, his birthplace, where celebrations have already begun. The announcement was made by the Union Government on October 30, 2025, bringing an end to the speculation about succession.
Justice Surya Kant will assume office on November 24, 2025, immediately after the retirement of Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai on November 23. His tenure will run for approximately 14 months, ending on February 9, 2027, when he turns 65, the official retirement age for Supreme Court judges. While the term is relatively short, it is expected to be eventful given the sensitive constitutional and political matters before the court.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed the appointment late Thursday night through a post on X. He expressed happiness over the decision, stating that the President, under constitutional authority, has appointed Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice. The minister congratulated him and extended best wishes for a successful tenure. This announcement came just two days after the incumbent CJI Gavai recommended his name to the government.
Justice Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962, into a modest middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana. Known for his discipline and hard work, he rose steadily through the legal system. His journey is seen as an inspiration for aspiring lawyers from small towns, proving that dedication and commitment can open the doors of the highest constitutional offices.
Justice Kant was elevated as a Supreme Court judge on May 24, 2019. Prior to this, he had an extensive career in the judiciary, serving in various High Courts. His judgments reflect his belief in constitutional morality and democratic values. Over the last two decades, he has become known for his clarity, integrity, and willingness to address sensitive issues without hesitation.
Among his significant contributions are verdicts related to the abrogation of Article 370, protection of free speech, cases on corruption, environment protection, and gender equality. He was also part of the bench that kept the colonial-era sedition law in abeyance, directing that no new cases be filed until a government review was completed. These decisions underline his progressive and balanced approach to law.
Legal experts believe Justice Surya Kant’s tenure will play a pivotal role in shaping India’s constitutional debates, particularly with major political and social cases in line for hearing. His appointment has raised hopes of decisive, transparent, and people-centric judgments. As the 53rd Chief Justice of India, he is expected to uphold the independence of the judiciary and strengthen public trust in the Supreme Court’s role as the guardian of democracy.
