National News: A special court in Bengaluru has convicted former Janata Dal MP Prajwal Revanna in a case of sexual assault and rape. The case was registered at Holenarasipura Rural Police Station in the Hassan district of Karnataka and is the first of four criminal cases registered against him.
The decision against Prajwal Revanna comes at a time when more than 2,000 objectionable videos of sexual violence allegedly committed by him surfaced on social media in 2024. These videos showed abuse of several women, causing outrage across the state.
According to media reports, the special court had completed the hearing of this case on July 18 and reserved the verdict. Now the court has convicted him on Friday, while the sentence will be announced on Saturday, August 2.
The first case against Revanna was registered in April 2024, when a woman filed a complaint. This woman was employed as domestic help at his family's farmhouse. The complainant alleged that she had been continuously sexually harassed by Revanna since 2021.
She also alleged that Revanna had threatened to make public the videos of the acts committed with her if she told anyone about this. After these serious allegations surfaced, Prajwal Revanna was suspended from the Janata Dal and was expelled from the party. The whole matter created a political stir in the state and the country.
Prajwal Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and son of former Karnataka minister HD Revanna. Such serious allegations and now a conviction against a man hailing from such an influential political family have generated both outrage and surprise among the public.
